CORPUS CHRISTI CHAPTER

OF THE

INTERNATIONAL THOMAS MERTON SOCIETY

               Saturday, MAY 9, 2:00-4:00 p.m.

               Merton and Judaism:

The Prophetic Voice--Merton, Heschel, and Vatican II

               Dr. Edward K. Kaplan, presenter

Edward K. Kaplan is Kaiserman Professor of the Humanities at Brandeis

University and chair of the Religious Studies program there.  He has published

many essays on Thomas Merton and his Jewish interests, including

"Incarcerated Prophets" in the Merton Seasonal.  His books on Abraham

Joshua Heschel include Holiness in Words and the recent Spiritual Radical.

In 2002 Dr. Kaplan organized the international conference "Merton and

Judaism," held in Louisville, Kentucky.  Thomas Merton had important

correspondence with Jewish writers and teachers.  His efforts, with those of

Rabbi Heschel, helped form the Vatican II document Nostra Aetate in its

chapter on relations with the Jews.

Free to Chapter members; $5 for non-members

                Next Meeting:  Saturday, September 26, 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Robert Lax's Circus of the Sun
