MINUTES OF MEETING OF PARISH COUNCIL OF CORPUS

                           CHRISTI PARISH – December 5, 2005 at 7:30 PM.

Present: Tom Croft, Elizabeth Browne, Rev. Raymond Rafferty (late), Marcia Y. Ruiz, Conchita Gonzalez (late), Mary McDonald, Julie Nsanzurwimo, Therese Miller McQuillan, Ann Plogsterth, Miriam Duran & Rev. William Wizeman

Absent: Bro. Lawrence Lavallee, Joan McCann, Leonard Robertson, Valerie Luizer (in hospital) & Mark Temple-Raston.

Opening Prayer: Rev. Bill Wizeman.

Amendments & Approval of Minutes of April Meeting: Miriam moved that the November Minutes, as amended, be approved. Seconded by Ann Plogsterth. Approved.

Pastor’s Report: Fr. Rafferty submitted his report in writing. It mentioned the following: 1)The profit from the Flea Market was $5,059.50. On behalf of the parish, Fr. Rafferty congratulated the committee & all whose hard work raised this significant sum. 2) Regarding finances, the Finance Committee will be meeting on December 17. At that time a financial statement for the parish will be requested. 3) Next year, because of the many activities of the 100th anniversary, there may not be either an autumn social or a flea market. The Council must consider how that will affect the parish budget & how additional monies can be raised. 4) He has met with the representative of the Archdiocesan Bicentennial Campaign, and was told again that our goal is $300,000.00 which has to be raised between January 1 & March 31. He was asked to meet with major financial donors before Christmas but the list has yet to be sent to Fr. Rafferty & the brochure is not completed. The representative further told Fr. Rafferty the brochure will include parish pictures, a small history of the parish, a proposal of parish needs & the pledge status. If one or two pages is/are to be in Spanish, which one(s)? He proposed the needs & pledge status. 5) We are not receiving a grant from the Inter-Parish Finance this year. That means we have a budget deficit & must make up that deficit. The grant from the Archdiocese was very helpful as it was not given to us directly but subtracted from the monthly bills for insurance & medical. The school did not request funding, but Fr. Rafferty thinks that it may need additional help. He does not believe that the tuition increase, though steep, will offset the insurance & the increase in teachers’ salaries. 6) Fr. Rafferty called for a Maintenance Committee. While Joe Gilchrist did come to help, and while Fr. Rafferty made it clear that the parish wishes to pay for items, he did some volunteer work, but much needs to be done, & it is difficult to pin down volunteers. Fr. Rafferty is unable to handle all maintenance problems alone (see New Business for more information about a Maintenance Committee). 7) Fr. Rafferty distributed a brochure from the Metropolitan Museum of Art concerning the Museum’s Art-Related Programs in your Neighborhood Parish that a program associated with the Fra. Angelico exhibition. If anyone is interested in trying to get this for the parish (it should be after January 1) he would encourage them to pursue it. Therese McQuillan volunteered to research it. 8) Only one person responded concerning the church doors, & the suggestion was that the patina be left alone. Roland Hiller left information about the bolt (a copy was circulated). Also, with the wetness on the church steps on December 4, it was very obvious how much paint dust has permeated the stone.

Principal’s Report: Betty Browne gave the report in Bro. Lawrence Lavallee’s absence: 1) To mark Advent, each Monday Fr. Rafferty visits each floor of the school with Bro. Larry & light the candles in the Advent wreaths. 2) A kitchen has been added for the Pre-kindergarten class. 3) The Pre-kindergarten & Kindergarten classes hosted a parent breakfast on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. 4) The 1st Quarter Students’ Honor Roll has been published (a copy is attached). 5) The students finished the Hurricane Katrina Aid Program and raised more than $1,000.00. 6) On December 7 the Manhattan School of Music will give a concert. 7) On December 8 the school will be closed for the feast of the Immaculate Conception. 8) On December 10 there will be a Christmas Bazaar in the gym that is being organized by the parents. 9) On December 15 the students’ progress reports will be sent home. 10) The Christmas Program will take place on December 16. 11) The Church of the Holy Trinity has “adopted” the school as part of its community outreach mission. Bro. Larry spoke at that parish’s Masses on December 4 & the parish has written a letter to its parishioners.

Centennial Committee Report: Minutes of October 18, 2005 & November 15, 2005 meetings received (a copy of November’s meeting is attached). Ann Plogsterth encapsulated the Minutes but see them for details. Betty announced the Centennial Mass celebrated by the Cardinal of New York will take place on Sunday, October 22, 2006.

Parish Social Committee: Betty reported that $3,494.00 was raised. The procedure of handling the raffle tickets has to be re-organized. Finally, Antonio wants more involvement in preparation of the food.

Flea Market Report: Miriam said there was a very good attendance on both days & Conchita told us that about $5,100.00 was raised (a few small amounts have still to be accounted for).

Parish Council Elections: There will be 3 vacancies but all current holders of these positions, Ann Plogsterth, Julie Nsanzurwimo & Mary McDonald, indicated they will run again. In addition, Frank Paz has mentioned that he would like to be a candidate.

New Business: After some discussion, the following members agreed to become members of a Maintenance Sub-Committee: Therese McQuillan, Fr. Bill Wizeman & Elizabeth Browne. They will be calling several people & Betty will ask Bro. Larry to send a letter to the students’ parents asking for the help of any who are qualified to undertake various maintenance tasks.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, January 9 at 7:30 PM.

The meeting then adjourned.

Also, we should remember Dolores Garcia in our prayers because she has had a stroke.  He then reported the following: 1) The financial statement requested by the Council was published in last week’s bulletin. 2) Thank you to Therese Miller McQuillan for investigating the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s program about Fra Angelico. After talking to a few people, Fr. Rafferty decided that we could not get the number of people they wished us to have & no good date existed in January.3) The Archdiocesan Bicentennial Campaign has begun in our parish. Fr. Rafferty has been instructed by the campaign coordinators to speak with parishioners who hav contributed large amounts to previous campaigns & appeals. When a significant part of the $300,000.00 goal has been raised, letters to all parishioners will be sent, hopefully by late February. People are asked to make pledges. Any gift under $10,000,00 may be pledged over 3 years. Larger gifts may be paid off over  5 years. 80% of the amount will be allocated to the parish with the remaining 20% earmarked for needy parishes. 4) Has Jane Hart spoken to anyone about a possible pancake breakfast after some Masses on February 26? If not, can someone contact her? The problem is the use of the auditorium after the 1:00 PM Mass because of a concert. Betty Browne & Tom Croft will speak to Jane. 5) Rob Meadows Rogers has agreed to chair the committee for the 100th Anniversary Mass which Cardinal Egan will celebrate on Sunday, October 22 at 10:00 AM. There will be no 11:15 AM & 1:00 PM Masses that day. Some of the issues include: invitations to dignitaries, publicity within the parish, ushers & reception.

6) Several other programs are being planned for the 100th anniversary year beginning in October. Parishioners will be asked to help with many things. 7) Flyers for the Lenten Sunday Vespers are available here. 8) Members of  the Parish Council & 100th Anniversary Committee are invited to supper on Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at 7:00 PM. It is the anniversary of the actual day of the incorporation of the parish. 9) Fr. Rafferty will defer remarks about maintenance until the report of the Maintenance Committee.

Centennial Committee Report: Ann Plogsterth distributed the Minutes from the prior meeting & mentioned it was exciting to discover the Dedication Booklet for the first church on June 30, 1907. It has photos that have not been seen in many years as well as interesting advertisements of that era.

Election Committee Report: The elections are now scheduled for the weekends of February 25 & 26 & March 4 & 5. There are 5 candidates for the 3 positions; Julie Nsanzurwimo, Mary McDonald & Ann Plogsterth have agreed to run again while Brenda Faraday & Frank Paz will be the new candidates. Therese Miller McQuillan, Tom Croft, & Mark Temple-Raston will assist at the various Masses.

Old Business: Betty Browne reported on her efforts with maintenance. She called several parents who were not interested. Betty will also call the person in charge of Morningside Gardens to get his input about Maintenance Companies. Mr. Dave Morgan suggested we interview maintenance companies that could take care of all repairs. He also mentioned to Therse Miller McQuillan that he can’t take care of the repairs. Fr. Wizeman had passed along some names as possibilities. Fr. Rafferty added the following information: i) The Building Commission visited following the serious flood damage in the School/Convent that occurred in October. The Commission promised to get back to Fr. Rafferty & Bro. Lavallee within 2/3 weeks but there has been nothing so far. ii) Bro. Lavallee walked another person through the areas & this person promised to get back to him by last week – again no response. More leaks are showing up in different places.

Approval of Minutes of February Meeting: Therese Miller McQuillan moved that February’s Minutes be approved. Unanimously approved.

Pastor’s Report: Fr. Rafferty reported: 1) A difficult time in getting the Inspection Report from the Building Commission of the Archdiocese. It was received 2 weeks ago. The proposed cost for repairs is in excess of $600,000.00. Ann Plogsterth interjected that recently she contacted WNYC radio; one of whose regular features highlights building problems. The radio station sent an inspector to the Parish today & a report will be issued within a week. The radio station would provide inspectors to monitor the contractors doing the repairs should we decide to utilize their services. Fr. Rafferty said he would expect that report will also state the necessity of a large amount of money to make the repairs. 2) Maintenance remains a problem; for example, a recent repair to a toilet in the Rectory cost $500.00. 3) The boiler broke down during the week the School children were on vacation. Those repairs cost $1,100.00. 4) There are electrical problems in the Church – the person who said he would come on Tuesday did not arrive. 5) The School needs to be rewired. 6) A painter will be coming to assess the floors & pews. Fr. Wizeman suggested the pastors at the nearby parishes of Ascension & Holy Name be called to find out who they use for maintenance. Betty Browne said she would call the pastors. 7) Archdiocesan Campaign update: letters have been mailed to parishioners. Fr. Rafferty must do the campaigning. He had to approach 10 parishioners who normally donate larger amounts & now has to speak to another 10. There are daily calls from the Commission for progress reports on the amounts raised. 8) This May 28th will be Fr. Rafferty’s 40th anniversary of Ordination. A discussion ensued about the best way to celebrate the occasion. It was decided there will be a celebration after the 11:15 AM Mass. 9) Fr. Rafferty also mentioned that he has been diagnosed with high blood pressure, angina & blockages of his arteries.

Principal’s Report: Bro. Lavallee reported: 1) Planning for next year is underway & included a day’s meeting with the Faculty. The need to raise money without increasing tuition was one item discussed. 2) Tests will be conducted over the next couple of weeks. 3) The School’s population is OK but not at the maximum. Students are still being accepted; for example, two were this week. 4) Promotional materials are being sent to professional offices of various institutions, businesses, etc. 5) There is no fixed Registration Date but there is a need for an announcement that registration is on-going. 6) Holy Trinity Parish’s interest in the School is yielding good tangible results. Several examples are: a librarian from that Parish volunteers at the School twice a week, $13,000.00 has been donated by their parishioners & a Family Counselor is available free of charge. Also a large amount of art supplies has been given to the School. A newsletter is being printed for Holy Trinity Parish & 3 school children will speak at that Parish’s Masses. 7) The annual alumni appeal has raised $11/12,000.00 so far.

Centennial Committee Report: Ann Plogsterth distributed the Minutes from the prior meetings of  January 17, 2006 & February 21, 2006. Ann mentioned the highlights of an author of the history of the Parish has been found & planned events with neighborhood institutions are going well. The Music CD is being re-released & a new one will be recorded.

But there were no “hanging chads.” Julie Nsanzurwimo & Ann Plogsterth were re-elected while Frank Paz has been elected to his first time. Retiring member, Mary Mc Donald was thanked for her work on the Council. Fr. Rafferty also thanked everyone involved.

Supper: The supper to commemorate the 100th anniversary will take place on Tuesday, March 7 at 7 PM.

Old Business: Mary McDonald raised the issue of accessibility to the Church via the elevator. Mary recommended we get a person to operate the elevator for the Sunday Masses (or some thereof). Conchita Gonzalez & Miriam Duran will research the issue for coverage for the 10 AM & 11:15 AM Masses.

New Business: 1) Fr. Rafferty reminded everyone about the Spring Social/Brunch. The best time would be Sunday, June 11. It could be combined with the School’s Music/Art Show.
