An invitation from the Community of Sant' Egidio

Tuesdays throughout the year at 6:30 p.m.

_____________________________________________________________

The Community of Sant' Egidio gathers in prayer every Tuesday evening at

Corpus Christi Church for a simple half hour service of psalms and scripture.

They listen to the Word of God, prepare for service, and share friendship

     with all.

They also meet on Fridays through the year at 6:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's

in Greenwich Village, 371 Sixth Avenue.

The Community of Sant' Egidio is now present in more than sixty countries on all continents, with communities sharing common prayer and service to the poor.  In 1992 the Community successfully concluded the facilitation of the peace process in Mozambique and is currently involved in many other initiatives in Africa.  The Community also runs the dream project to fight the aids/hiv epidemic in Southern Africa.

A fruit of the Second Vatican Council, the Community took its first steps at the beginning of 1968 in Rome, Italy.  A small group of high school students started, by the initiative of Andrea Riccardi, a simple path of prayer and service to the poor.  The invitation of John XXIII to be "the Church of all, especially the poor" sounded particularly needed then, as it is now in our present society.  Around the prayer and service, a new fraternity began that reconciled people who had been divided from one another.
